Ansbach opens Army's 'greenest' Auto Skills Center 05/14/2013 ANSBACH, Germany (March 14, 2013) -- The newest, most environmentally friendly automotive skills center in the Army opened April 26 at U.S. Army Garrison Ansbach's Urlas housing and training area here. Hundreds of Soldiers, family members, and American and German civilians attended the Ansbach Automotive Skills Center grand opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony as visitors had a chance to see what the $6 million Morale, Welfare and Recreation complex offers.
Renewable Energy Project Request for Proposal at Fort Irwin 05/10/2013 On May 9, 2013, the Defense Logistics Agency Energy (DLA Energy), in close coordination with the Army Energy Initiatives Task Force (EITF), released a Request for Proposal (RFP) to procure solar energy from a photovoltaic Renewable Energy Generation System (REGS) located on Fort Irwin in California. The government estimates the size of the system at 15 megawatts, subject to final specification by the selected developer. The Solicitation, SP0600-13-R-0412, is posted on the Federal Business Opportunities website at www.fbo.gov.
Army Lab engineers want 'smart energy' for warfighters 05/09/2013 ADELPHI, Md. (May 9, 2013) -- Troops in a tactical environment have unique challenges with efficient energy use that are uncommon to the rest of the fighting forces. One is that a Soldier positioned to stand guard at an outpost, or forward operating base, should not have to think about energy -- a distraction from the strategy and Soldier protection.
In a recent panel discussion in Washington, D.C., April 10, Katherine Hammack, the Army's assistant secretary for installations, energy and environment, said that "energy is mission critical. It is vulnerability. It is a risk."
USAG Wiesbaden recycling initiatives taking shape 05/07/2013 WIESBADEN, Germany - A new recycling and re-use center on Clay Kaserne, improved trash collection points in Hainerberg and Aukamm Housing, and regular inspections are aimed at encouraging everyone to properly separate their refuse and save.
"Proper separation of waste is extremely important," said Marty Hanson, an environmental specialist with the Directorate of Public Works. "Recycling is the law in Germany."

Summer to bring new energy projects - United States Air Force Academy - U.S. Air Force Academy 05/04/2013 U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. -- This summer brings with it the potential for a new wave of energy initiatives at the Academy that will range from changing light bulbs to implementing test technology to reduce cost and save energy. "Probably one of the biggest things projected to start this summer is the replacement of all the street lights with LED bulbs," said Russell Hume, a mechanical engineer with the Academy's Installations Directorate. "Right now there are different kinds of technology being used and not many of the bulbs last more than 10 years. The LED bulbs, however, are expected to last 22 years and the savings should be $50,000 a year as well as an electrical savings of 1-2 percent base wide."
