Operational Tools: Step-by-Step Guidance Manual
List of Forms Used in the Guidance Manual
The Environmental Management System (EMS) Guidance Manual: Implementing
ISO 14001 was designed to help military installations meet the EMS
requirements mandated by the Department of Defense (DoD) and, more specifically, the United States
Army. The primary purpose of this manual is to provide an understanding of the five EMS Principles and
the required elements or procedures associated with those phases. This understanding can assist
any Joint Service installation in the process of establishing an EMS that either conforms to, or
parallels, the ISO 14001 Standard. The manual provides basic directions and tools for developing
the processes and procedures that meet the requirements of this Standard. The Manual is intended
only to provide basic guidance and is not meant to cover every possible situation that a facility may
encounter when establishing an EMS or obtaining ISO 14001 Registration. Even though this Manual is based on the
ISO 14001-1996 Standard, it is still a very useful tool, and the information contained in it can
easily be updated to conform to the 2004 Standard.

Listed below is an alphabetical list of the forms referenced in this manual. The
completed forms provide an example of an EMS that was established for a generic "Fort Anywhere Motor Pool". The forms may be
copied even though the Guidance Manual itself is copyrighted. Either the completed examples or the blank forms can be
used. The forms are meant to provide basic examples and can be customized to meet the needs, requirements, and goals of a
specific organization, installation, or process.
