Other EMS Tools
This section provides links to resources that are particularly useful during the assessment phase and
other beginning phases of the EMS Implementation Process. It is recommended that the issues and
approaches discussed in the Where to Start: Key Decisions for
Successful EMS Implementation and The Roadmap For Successful
Environmental Management System (EMS) Implementation be considered before the actual
implementation of an EMS is started.
The information in this section provides some of the building blocks for the environmental
management process "tool." This "tool" is not an end in itself but only serves as the
beginning of a continual improvement cycle that must be used to provide value to the organization. The
real work is the continual improvement aspect of the process and this aspect begins after the
implementation process is completed and this environmental management process tool is
functional. The assessment and evaluation resources in this section are instrumental in helping to
build this tool - a tool that will provide a new way of managing and continually improving the
environmental aspects of federal facility and Joint Service mission activities.
- Assessment Tools - Provides links to resources for EMS
evaluations, self-assessments, and gap analyses,
- Aspects/Impacts Links - Provides links to resources
that are of specific importance when an organization is in the process of identifying the
environmental aspects and impacts for all the activities and practices it conducts,
- Awareness Tools - Provides links to resources for tools
that are useful for gaining and maintaining employee EMS awareness.
Additional resources that compliment the information in the Other EMS Tools section can be found
in the Virtual References section which
provides valuable EMS information and how Federal Facilities, the DoD, the Joint Services, public
organizations, and private businesses are approaching EMS issues.
