EMS Primer
Each Joint Service is approaching EMS implementation according to the specific policies,
directives, and missions of their Service. Once Service-level policies and directives have been
developed, individual facilities and installations develop an EMS that is tailored to meet
their site-specific missions, needs and environmental objectives.
Even though every EMS will be different because it is based on the
specific needs and goals of that particular facility, there are principles and elements that
are common to all EMS approaches. The primary purpose of this Primer
is to provide a basic understanding of what an EMS involves and to offer an overview of
common principles and elements.
An understanding of the basic essentials of an EMS is an ISO Standard requirement for everyone who is
involved in the daily operations, practices, and processes
that an EMS impacts. Employees throughout the entire organization will be involved in developing,
implementing and maintaining the EMS.
