EMS Primer - Benefits
All organizations that implement an EMS will see improvement
in their environmental programs and overall environmental performance. However, no two organizations
are alike and the number of benefits that result, and the degree of those
benefits, will differ significantly based on a number of factors, such as the
size and complexity of the facility, the maturity and extent of pre-existing
environmental programs, the site-specific missions, or the stated EMS goals and
needs of the facility. Also, the nature of benefits, at times, can be dependent
on the implementation stage of the process. For example, during the initial
stages of implementation, the benefits usually are found in the areas of
improved communication and/or eliminating redundancy in roles and
responsibilities. However, as the EMS implementation progresses, organizations
often start to see cost savings, increased operational efficiency, and improved
environmental compliance.
All organizations or facilities that implement an EMS will,
sooner or later, see many enhanced benefits in the overall operation of the
organization. Some of the more common benefits include:
- Improved environmental performance
- Enhanced compliance
- Greater prevention of pollution and resource conservation
- Increased efficiency / reduced costs
- Enhanced employee morale
- Increased safety and decreased accidents
- Reduced liability
- Enhanced image and better relations with the public, regulators, and stakeholders
- Improved employee awareness of environmental issues and responsibilities
