EMS Use Is A Focal Point Of Executive Order 13423
December 17, 2007
On January 24th, 2007, President George W. Bush
signed Executive Order (EO)
13423: Strengthening Federal Environmental, Energy, and Transportation Management. This EO requires the use of Environmental
Management Systems (EMS) as the management framework to implement, manage, measure, and continually improve upon, the sustainable practices and goals mandated by the EO.
EO 13423 recognizes that an EMS is tool that provides a framework and a roadmap that enables an organization to:
- Enhance and improve the overall efficiency and effectiveness of existing and future environmental responsibilities and operations,
- Control the environmental impact of its activities and services,
- Continually improve its environmental performance, and
- Commit to sustainable development and practices as strategic objectives.
Employees throughout your organization are impacted by the environmental requirements and practices mandated in EO 13423
and, in turn, by your organization’s EMS. These activities and operations include, but are not limited to:
- Pollution Prevention
- Environmental Management Systems (EMS)
- Sustainable Operations
- Green Building
- Natural Resource Protection
- Range Management
- Green Purchasing
- Energy
- Electronic Products Stewardship
- Vehicle Fleet Management
- Water Conservation
