Jacksonville Aviation Survival Training Center Receives Solar, Natural Gas Heating System 08/29/2010 JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (NNS) -- Naval Air Station (NAS) Jacksonville's Aviation Survival Training Center (ASTC) steam heating system was replaced Aug. 4 with a new solar thermal and natural gas system which will dramatically reduce the command's utility expenditures.
Naval Facilities Engineering Command Southeast Public Works Department (PWD) Project Manager Nick Bloomer said the new system consists of 168 flat-plate, solar-thermal collectors on the roof of the ASTC Jacksonville building which are interconnected with an efficient, natural-gas-fired heating system.

SECNAV Hosts Chesapeake Bay Commanders Conference 08/25/2010 ANNAPOLIS (NNS) -- The secretary of the Navy in conjunction with the governor of Maryland hosted the Maryland Chesapeake Bay base commander's conference at the U.S. Naval Academy Aug. 25.
Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus and Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley were joined by Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lisa Jackson and commanders of military installations in the Chesapeake Bay region.
The Chesapeake Bay is the largest and most biologically diverse estuary in the United States. According to the Chesapeake Bay Project website, the region is home to oysters, more than 350 fish species, hundreds of migratory bird species, approximately 418 million blue crabs and 17 million people.

Tyndall Officials Unveil 'Green' Fitness Center 08/20/2010 TYNDALL AIR FORCE BASE, Fla. (AFNS) -- Tyndall Air Force Base officials opened the first building in the Air Force expected to reach the U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Platinum level here Aug. 20. The platinum level is the highest rating possible under the group's green building rating system.
Holloman Energy and Water Conservation Projects Hit the Ground 08/18/2010 HOLLOMAN AIR FORCE BASE, N.M. (AFNS) -- Officials here are making progress toward reducing energy consumption, which currently costs the base $18,000 per day.
The Air Force is funding more than $5 million in energy conservation projects at Holloman AFB. The projects include upgrading the lighting in hangars and high-bay facilities, converting office lighting to more efficient fixtures, installing occupancy sensors for lighting and installing meters on all buildings that are more than 35,000 square feet.
